Text Box: STATE COLLEGE, PA (January 18, 2011) – The Pennsylvania Junior Cattlemen’s Association will hold their 20th Annual Junior Steer and Heifer Preview Show at the 21st Annual Pennsylvania Beef Expo, March 24 – 27, 2011 at the Snyder Ag Arena, State College, PA.  The Expo is an excellent opportunity for junior cattlemen members to exhibit their animals in a weekend of fun and education.

	Since its creation in 1989, the PA Beef Expo, formed to service the beef cattle industry in Pennsylvania; has expanded to include activities targeted to both Junior and Senior PCA members.  This year’s Expo begins Thursday, March 24, with an Educational Program; one component of which will be Beef Quality Assurance Training – Parts I and II.  This training session will be presented by the PA Beef Council, and conducted at the Snider Ag Arena.  The classroom portion of BQA training is planned for 12:00 Noon to 1:30PM.  Lunch will be provided.  The chute side portion of the program will follow from 2:00PM to 4:00PM. Running concurrently, will be a presentation from NRCS, (Jana Mallot), at the LEC from 1:00 to 3:00pm.  The topics will be Grazing Improvements and Financial Assistance Available Through Government Programs. Following the info from NRCS, will be details about the new beef backgrounding program available to Pa producers. This backgrounding program is being sponsored by the Keystone Beef Marketing Network and United Producers Inc., the largest farmer owned, livestock marketing cooperative in the country.
	
Thursday evening will feature the PCA Annual Meeting and Banquet at Celebration Hall with the reception to begin at 5:00PM, dinner at 6:00PM, and the meeting to follow.   The Association will recognize cattle producers with several awards including the Industry Services Award, Commercial Cattlemen, Seedstock Breeder, and Cattle Feeder of the Year.  Other banquet highlights include the Top Hand Award, BQA Awards, and announcement of the 2011 PA Beef Ambassador.  Banquet reservations can be made by calling the PCA office at (570) 254-6856.  All PCA members are encouraged to come to their annual meeting and conduct the business of the association, even if they are unable to attend the dinner.  
	
Friday, March 25, has PA’s Performance Tested Bull Sale taking center stage at the Livestock Evaluation Center, with a Simmental female sale to follow.  There will be a large Trade Show running concurrently; and good food available throughout the Expo with the featured item being the Keystone Rib-eye Steak Sandwich.

	Once again this year’s PA Beef Expo will provide Pennsylvania Junior Cattlemen’s Association members (PJCA), with an opportunity to test their beef industry knowledge at the annual PA Beef Expo Skillathon and the PA Beef Expo Quiz Bowl challenge.
 
	The Beef Expo Quiz Bowl Challenge will take place Friday, March 25, beginning with preliminaries at 5:00 p.m.  Since its onset, the Quiz Bowl Challenge has provided exciting memories, with the heated Quiz Bowl Finale.  Any teams of four PJCA, 4-H or FFA members are invited to compete.  The competition will be divided into two divisions: 14 to 21 yr. olds (seniors) and 8 to 13 yr. olds (juniors).  Primary quiz bowl topics will include nutrition, genetics, reproduction, animal health, marketing and promotion, and cattle breeds.

Considered to be one of the most popular events of the Beef Expo, this year’s Beef Skillathon will be held Saturday, March 26th, from 8:30-10:00 a.m. at the Snider Ag Arena, University Park.  Coordinated by the Penn State Block and Bridle Club, the Skillathon is an excellent opportunity for young beef enthusiasts to test their beef industry knowledge.  By incorporating project skills and industry basics in a series of mini-learning stations, participants compete in areas such as identification of beef breeds, retail cuts, feed ingredients and food safety.

	The Beef Skillathon and Quiz Bowl Challenge competitions are open to all PJCA, 4-H and FFA members.  Previously, the Skillathon as well as the Quiz Bowl competition was utilized as an excellent learning opportunity by all in attendance.  Individuals can join the PJCA for a $5.00 annual membership fee at the contest site.  Four-member county, club or school teams in any division are also invited to participate in the Quiz Bowl. 	This year’s PA Beef Expo Heifer Show will be held Saturday, March 26, at 1:00 p.m. and will sport several different beef cattle breeds.  All heifers born between September 2009 and October 2010 are eligible for the show.  The Junior Steer Show is scheduled for Sunday, March 27, following the showmanship classes that begin at 8:00 a.m. Light, middle, heavy weight division champions will compete for Grand Champion laurels.
